ASR Defence Pty Ltd and Mellori Solutions are jointly supervising a challenging project for University of Wollongong engineering students. 5 students will develop a cognitive RF systems testbed. Cognitive RF systems are essentially closed-loop control systems, but in the RF domain. They bring AI, RF engineering, software engineering and electronics expertise to this multidisciplinary problem. This uses the underlying Vanguard philosophy but in a different way. One part of the team will develop the adaptive communication system, while the others will build a cognitive electronic attack to interfere with their reception.

ASR Defence and Mellori are jointly advancing Australia’s capability in RF engineering and signal processing, with a strong focus on practical application to complex electromagnetic environments. Through the development of adaptive sensing systems, cognitive RF techniques, and real-world testbeds, they are building deep expertise in how signals are generated, interpreted, and exploited for operational advantage. A key part of this effort is fostering greater familiarity with low SWaP (Size, Weight and Power) solutions, particularly through the use of software-defined radios (SDRs), enabling scalable, deployable, and cost-effective systems. Together, they are contributing to a sovereign capability in RF technologies that supports defence, research, and industry innovation.
